I’m all for reduced spending in government, but when congressmen start talking about cutting spending, they march out the usual whipping boys…..social security, Medicare, Medicaid, and healthcare, once again shifting the responsibility back onto Americans who can ill afford to lose their benefits. Until the American people demand accountability from big brother, nothing will change. Don’t be fooled, the ‘old boy network’ on Capital Hill is doing what they do best, looking after their own best interests.

The lawmakers in Washington, bickering about a deficit reduction plan is nothing new, except the stakes are a whole lot higher, and nobody wants to pay. I’m not a market analyst, just a mad scientist that’s tired of seeing the economy raped to support the irresponsible practices of big businesses. Congress voted to bail out the banks to the tune of 700 billion and rising, in the name of saving our country from financial disaster, all they really did was place the consequence of irresponsible spending squarely on the American public’s shoulders, instead of where it belonged.

I. Harmful—a word daring caution—Chance peers through the window. Another column of black smoke rises in the distance; a noxious slur of ash and debris, the atmosphere a tapestry of gray and black particles. It all started six months ago, well the worst of it anyway. He reaches up, wiping the sweat from his forehead, it feels like an oven inside but he’s afraid to open the windows. The room’s floor is a jumbled mess; a patchwork dotted with blankets, a propane camping stove and bottled water—harmful outside. A fit of coughing racks his body.
